Relationships are the heart of social emotional learning, but with many schools currently offering remote learning instruction establishing supportive, caring relationships is a big challenge.  The Sharing Circle process has been used for decades in classrooms and counseling groups to create a sense of community and to lay the foundation of a safe, caring learning environment while also specifically teaching such SEL skills as self-awareness, self-management, social-awareness, and relationship skills.  In Sharing Circles the students and their teacher (or counselor) get to know each other on a meaningful, supportive level while discussing relevant topics dealing with the wide range of social emotional skill development.

A key avenue to maintaining and enhancing our social and emotional lives is through the process of verbal interaction.  Even with the social restrictions imposed on us by the COVID pandemic, with our complex emotional and relational lives, it would be devastating if we couldn’t talk with others about such things as our experiences, feelings, hopes, fears, desires etc.  When we do share our experiences and feelings at a level beyond superficiality, we come to realize that all of us not only experience all of the emotions and feelings, but that we each experience them in our own unique ways.  By sharing meaningful experiences and feelings in a safe space we are enabled to see the basic commonalities among us, and the individual differences too.  This understanding leads to self-awareness and self-respect.  On this foundation we can then develop empathy and concern for others as well.   The benefits of time devoted to Sharing Circles, whether online or in person, is a growing awareness of self and an understanding of the importance of effectively relating to others.
